Guilt
|
Guilt plays a major role in the movie. The entire reason that Laeddis has created an alternate reality for himself is because he cannot live with the guilt that he feels for killing his wife and children. He did not get the help that Dolores needed, and she drowned their children. He feels that it is completely his fault. He refuses to accept the fact that the event or even his children ever happened. This theme goes hand in hand with trauma. Laeddis' guilt is represented by the flashbacks of his wife and daughter. While it is not explained that the little girl is his daughter in the beginning, it is revealed in the end, and she blames him for not saving her. All his problems are due to the overwhelming guilt that he feels.
