Plot
In the beginning of the movie, we are introduced to two U.S. Marshals, Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule. They are on a ferry in the Boston Harbor heading to Shutter Island, a mental institution for the criminally insane that are too dangerous to be around the public. They are called in for the case of a missing patient, Rachel Solando. Teddy also wants to find Andrew Laeddis, the arsonist who set the fire that his wife was killed in. However, when they first arrive they are treated with hostility and no help from the staff. Things begin to go downhill and Teddy has migraines and odd dreams. When Rachel shows up, Teddy turns against the staff and begins to investigate on his own. He believes that they are creating “ghosts” to spy for the United States government. When his partner, Chuck, goes missing, he believes that the staff is lying to him and goes to find Chuck. Instead, he is met by the lead doctor, Dr. Cawley. It is then revealed that Teddy Daniels is just an alter ego that Andrew Laeddis made up. He has been a patient for the past two years that was admitted for killing his wife after she killed their three children. The staff played into his fantasy to see if they could cure him. He now must choose to accept that Teddy is fake and that he is Laeddis and live with the guilt of killing his wife and not getting her help. However, he would rather die a good man rather then live a monster. Instead he chooses to believe he is Teddy not Laeddis.
